What
is Astigmatism? (ah-stig-mah-tizm)
Astigmatism
is a visual distortion caused by an irregularly shaped cornea
(the primary focusing lens on the front of the eye). This
is a normal condition that exists when the surface of the
cornea is toric- that is, oblong like a football or rugby
ball instead of perfectly round like a basketball. Light
rays passing through an oblong cornea bend unequally, causing
two focusing points. Consequently, vision is blurred at
most distances. Forty-five percent of people who require
vision correction have some degree of astigmatism. Symptoms
include squinting, occasional headaches and eye strain.
In most cases, astigmatism is accompanied by myopia (nearsightedness)
or hyperopia (farsightedness). Astigmatism usually is hereditary,
although environmental factors, such as too much close-up
work and low light levels, also may contribute. Over time,
astigmatism may increase slowly. Butgenerally, over a lifetime,
the condition remains relatively stable.
How
can it be treated?
Westcon's
Horizon Toric can correct your vision for astigmatism. If
your prescription contains three parts rather than one,
you have some amount of astigmatism.A prescription with
three parts looks like this: -2.75 -1.25 x 180. Contact
lenses that correct astigmatism are called toric contact
lenses. It used to be that only spectacles or rigid contact
lenses could correct astigmatism. Now there is a soft lens
design that can correct most astigmatisms, Westcon’s
Horizon Toric. Around the world, millions of people with
astigmatism wear soft contact lenses every day. Studies
have found that vision with soft toric contact lenses is
comparable to vision with eyeglasses. Because Westcon Horizon
Toric lenses are more complex than regular lenses, toric
lenses have to be custom fit to your eyes. First, your doctor
will find the right fit for you. Then the lenses must be
ordered to precise specifications. When the lenses arrive,
the fit and quality of vision will be checked by your doctor
when the lenses are dispensed to you. This process can usually
be completed within a few days.
How
a Horizon Toric Lens Corrects Astigmatism

The irregular shape of an astigmatic’s eye cornea
and/or lens produces two focusing points in front of or
behind the retina resulting in blurred vision.

The Horizon Toric Lens corrects the refractive errors, creating
a single focal point on the retina where vision is sharpest.
What
is Myopia?
Myopia
is commonly called “nearsightedness”. It occurs
when one’s eye is “too long,” so that
distant objects can’t be properly focused on the retina.
The blurred vision that results can be corrected with “minus
power” lenses. Nearly half of all people with vision
correction needs are nearsighted.
How
does a Horizon Contact Lens correct Myopia?

The
shape of a myopic eye focuses images in front of the retina,
producing blurred distance vision.

By
reducing the cornea’s focusing power, Westcon’s
Horizon spherical contact lens creates a single
focal point on the retina where vision is sharpest.
What
is Hyperopia?
Hyperopia
or “farsightedness”occurs when the eye is “too
short” and focused light falls on a focal point behind
the retina. People who are hyperopic need help seeing objects
close up.
How
does a Horizon Contact Lens correct Hyperopia?

The
shape of a hyperopic eye focuses images behind the retina,
producing blurred vision of near objects.

By
increasing the cornea’s focusing power, Westcon’s
Horizon spherical contact lens corrects the refractive
error, creating a single focal point on the retina where
vision is sharpest.
What
is Presbyopia??
Presbyopia
(prez-bee-OH-pee-uh) is an age-related condition that makes
it difficult for us to see objects up close. As we age, the
crystalline lens within our eye hardens and loses the elasticity
that’s required to focus on objects up close. It happens
to everyone. It can develop as early as 40 or as late as
50. But by 50, virtually everyone is presbyopic. Fortunately,
presbyopic eyesight can easily be improved. One option is
contact lenses. Wouldn’t you like the freedom and
comfort of soft contact lenses? Westcon offers two different
contact lenses for people with presbyopia. The Horizon Progressive,
a multifocal lens for near, intermediate and far vision
as well as the Horizon Bi-Con, a bifocal lens for near and
far distances. up close and everything in between. The
power in the lens changes progressively from the center
to the edge of the visual zone. Good intermediate vision
is important for tasks such as working at a computer.
